On Monday, June 11th, Rev. Karen Curtis-Weakley, began her calling to Hope UCC as our designated pastor. Karen graduated from Bowling Green University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts in Interpersonal & Public Communication. In 1993 Karen started seminary at Methodist Theological School in Delaware, OH, to become a counselor. But, when taking courses in religion she changed her major and, in1997, Karen graduated with a Masters of Divinity. She attended Asbury United Methodist Church and presented her first sermon there. After seminary, she served in two rural Kansas churches. While Rev. Karen was completing Clinical Pastoral Education she began working with the church, she served as Chaplain with Hospice of Volusia and Flagler counties. During this time she not only facilitated grief groups but also coordinated grief camps for children. Starting in 2001 she was Associate Minister of Christian Education and Spiritual Development for 6 years at Windermere Union Church, a UCC Church. While in Orlando, Karen attended the Florida Center of Theological Studies to begin classes for her doctor in ministry.
Maria was born on January 24, 1963 in Zaragoza, Spain. Her mother, Perseveranda, was from a small village nearby, called Farlete, (population of 442) and her father, Jose, was born in Puerto Rico. He was working as a civilian at the US Airforce base when they met and had three daughters. When J.F. Kennedy was killed in November of that year, the Air Force base was closed and they came to Long Island, NY. It was there that she graduated from the Academy of St. Joseph in Brentwood while dual enrolled at St. Joseph’s College. In 1981 she traveled back to Spain (Barcelona) and began working as a bilingual executive assistant and was then promoted to Purchasing Director for an agricultural machinery company (International Harvester). She married her late husband, Miguel, in 1984 and had two children, Miguel and Monica. With the unexpected and untimely passing of her husband in 1997, she returned to the US and has been living in the Suntree/Viera area ever since. Here, she met her husband, Rick, who has been her rock! Miguel, after graduating from FSU, now lives in Charlotte, NC and works for Bank of America. He is married to Kelli and they have a daughter, Riley Harper. Monica just purchased a house in Viera and is a second grade teacher at Viera Charter School. She is planning to marry Evan McKeone in June 2019. Maria loves jigsaw puzzles from 500 to 5000, riding her bike, or golf cart with her little Yorkie Rico, knitting, old music like Englebert Humperdink and Tennessee Ernie Ford. She says she really enjoys working at Hope UCC because, “Each week I learn more about this faith and find it so welcoming and inclusive. It is also a very peaceful environment, which is definitely a plus!”
